Choosing to trust

Trust is often used in our society to describe consistency, what we had agreed upon, and meeting expectations. “A business you can trust,” tells you that you can expect certain outcomes and receive a certain kind of treatment.

Yet this kind of way of seeing the world, that there are things we can always trust or rely on, creates a narrative that then is applied onto our relationships. We want to expect certain outcomes from our relationships, but when there is change, this can be perceived as a deviation from the plan.

But a plan that is created by an individual is never as complex and mysterious as the plan cultivated by the unseen realms. What we try to see and lay out for us is… often too small for us to live, a la David Whyte.

If we have the courage to release ourselves from the grasps of our best laid plans, we gain the ability to listen to the voices of those who stand in the way, as they reveal to us, what is the true lesson here.

To release our plans, our attachments to outcomes, is an act of trust. This type of trust is not built on resumes, laws, or signed documents. It is the kind of trust that is an offering to the unknown. It is an asking for help. It is a surrender to the net that is ready to catch us when we decide to do the scary thing and trust without certainty.

Because to be certain that you have all the information to make a decision is not to be true to the expressions of change that we embody as human beings. For in each decision we make, we are choosing who and how we are changed, there is no way to predict who we’ll become or what will be of our becoming.

It is not easy to be changed. It is painful to transform. Yet the deeper we trust, the deeper our faith, and this is our greatest strength. When we take on the possibility that we choose to trust, rather than the world is proving its trustworthiness to us, we can rise to our power, and find our way by responding with trust and not scarcity to what is happening around us.

Trust that your longings are the future you’re meant to discover. Trust that you can transforming like a seed into life after life. Trust that your ancestor’s human and non-human are working hard on your behalf. Trust that the seasons and cycles are made for decay and renewal. Trust that you will change, and that your change will serve the great and beautiful turning.
